Poet Quazi Rosy no more

Noted poet and former lawmaker Quazi Rosy passed away at a hospital in Dhaka early today.

She breathed her last around 2:30am while undergoing treatment at the hospital, her daughter Sumi Sikandar confirmed through a Facebook post.

In the post, Sumi wrote that her mother was admitted to hospital on January 30 and was shifted to the ICU of the hospital's isolation unit after she tested positive for Covid-19.

Rosy was born in Satkhira on January 1, 1949. She earned her honour's and master's degrees from Bangla department of Dhaka University.

She retired as an official of Information Department on 2007.

Rosy was elected to the parliament -- from reserved seats for women -- through the 10th national election in January 2014.

"Pothghat Manusher Naam" and "Amar Piraner Kono Map Nei" are among her prominent poetry books.

She also received Bangla Academy Award in 2018 for her poetry and Ekushey Padak in 2021 for her contribution to language and literature.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of the poet.

In a message of condolence, she said, "Her brave role in literature and in the trial of war criminals will always be remembered."
