Five people, all in their 20s, were killed while returning from a wedding programme when their private car fell into a roadside pond in Chandpur early today.
The deceased were identified as passengers Shahparan Tushar (22), Shakil Hossain (26), Rezaul (24), Nayan (25), and its driver Sagar Hossain (24), reports our Cumilla correspondent quoting sub-inspector Mohammad Sahidur Rahman of Shaharasti Police Station.
Citing locals, police said they were returning from Comilla after attending a wedding ceremony.
The accident took place as the car lost control around 12:50 am on Chitshi Chatkhil Road in Narah area, the OC said.
"The car skidded off the road and fell into the pond when it came to a turn due to speeding. The vehicle drowned immediately. The five people died on the spot," he added.
Fire service and civil defence officials recovered the bodies and the car.
Further details regarding the incident could not be known immediately.
