Bangladesh to observe Ukraine situation

The cabinet on Monday asked the foreign ministry to observe the Ukraine situation after Russian invasion of the European country.

Cabinet secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam said this at a press briefing at the secretariat after the weekly meeting chaired by prime minister Sheikh Hasina virtually from her official residence Ganobhaban.

Bangladesh accelerates efforts to evacuate its distressed nationals stranded in war-torn Ukraine, families in the country are scrambling to get in touch with their loved ones.

Russia on Thursday invaded its neighbouring country Ukraine and quickly announced that it had neutralised key Ukrainian military facilities, but fierce fighting has since raged.

Ukraine forces, backed by Western arms, are stymieing the advance of Russian troops, according to the United States, which has led Western condemnation and a campaign of sanctions.

Leaders of the G7 on Sunday threatened fresh sanctions against Russia as the top United States diplomat Antony Blinken said the group of wealthy nations was ‘fully aligned’ against Ukraine invasion by Moscow.

Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain and the United States warned in a joint statement that they would ‘take further steps’ to add to the sanctions already announced if Russia did not cease its operation.
