Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity has demanded that the authorities concerned control movement of motorcycles, rickshaws, easy-bikes, auto-rickshaws on all roads and highways to ensure smooth movement of public transport during Eid-ul-Fitr 2022 journey.
The rights group also demanded reducing loss of lives and damages in road accidents during the Eid-ul-Fitr journey, according to a statement issued today (April 24, 2022).
In the statement, the organisation's Secretary General Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury made the demand.
Due to public transport crisis during Eid-ul-Fitr 2022, there may be around 12 lakh trips of commuters on motorcycles from Dhaka and other adjacent districts to different distances, he said.
Accidents happen when these motorcyclists take their wives, children and luggage, and ride recklessly on the roads.
If the movement of motorcycles is controlled with proper management, it is possible to reduce the accidents by 50 percent this Eid, he added.
He also said that small vehicles like easy-bikes, auto-rickshaws and rickshaws on the roads and highways will lessen the speed of long-distance buses and private cars – creating traffic congestion on important intersections and bus stands as well as increase the risk of accidents.
