Protest coordinator detained outside Tetultola playground in Kalabagan

Police have detained the coordinator of a protest campaign to save a playground in Dhaka’s Kalabagan from turning into a police station.

Syeda Ratna of the “Tetultola Math Rokkha Andolan” was held on Sunday outside the playground while she was protesting the construction of a boundary wall and streaming it live on Facebook.

Around 11am, she was whisked away by 20-25 female police members to the Kalabagan police station.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Mizan said, one person was brought to the police station, however, he could not reveal further information. “The officer-in-charge would know more details,” he said.

On January 31, deputy commissioner's office handed the playground's land to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for constructing a police station.

According to the residents, a team led by the officer-in-charge of Kalabagan police station removed children from the field and barricaded the area with barbed wires.

For months, residents have been protesting, demanding that it should be kept as it is.
