Police: Men in helmets during New Market clashes were criminals

The helmet-wearing men who were seen beating up students of Dhaka College and traders of New Market in the recent clashes in Dhaka’s New Market area are criminals, the Detective Branch (DB) of police has said.

DB Joint Commissioner Mahbub Alam made the remark while talking to reporters at DMP Media Center on Wednesday.

Answering a question on whether there were any Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders or activists among the identified people, Mahbub Alam, said: "There is no BCL committee in Dhaka College. Those who were wearing helmets are all criminals, and they will be brought to justice.”

As the residential halls at Dhaka College are currently closed, many have left Dhaka or are in hiding, but several DB police teams are trying to track them down, he added.

While investigators are close to identifying the killers of courier service employee Nahid Hossain, little progress has been made in the investigation into the murder of shop worker Mursalin.

“We are trying to locate all the accused,” the commissioner said.

Police on Monday identified the attackers of Nahid Hossain as belonging to the ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The man in a helmet who was seen mercilessly stabbing Nahid in video footage was identified as Bashar Emon, a second-year student.

Both Nahid and Mursalin died due to injuries sustained during clashes between New Market traders and Dhaka College students on April 19.

Nahid was found with critical injuries in front of Nurjahan Super Market, while Mursalin was found injured before Chandrima Super Market.

Nahid succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on the evening he was found, while Mursalin passed away on April 21.
