Power outage hits Sylhet as flood situation worsens

Power supply to Sylhet has been suspended to avoid accidents as the district’s Kumargaon grid substation has gone underwater.

The whole district has been without power since around 12:15pm on Saturday.

The Bangladesh Power Development Board would restore power once the water in the substation had receded, said Chief Engineer Abdul Kadir.

According to meteorologist Saeed Amhed Chowdhury, Sylhet saw 108mm of rainfall in 24 hours to Saturday morning.

Heavy rainfall would continue in the district till Sunday, he said.

The Bangladesh Water Development Board’s Sylhet office said the Surma River was flowing above the danger level at Kanaighat and Sylhet points at 6am on Saturday.
