Rohingyas stage demo in Bangladesh camps urging repatriation

Thousands of Rohingya people who were persecuted from Myanmer and took shelter in Bangladesh camps staged demonstration in their camps on Sunday to press their 19-point demand including immediate repatriation to their motherland Myanmar.

They staged demonstration in their camps Teknaf and Ukhiya upazilas in Cox’s Bazar districts also demanding an end to killings at their camps.

Though the police did not provide permission to stage the demonstration, they staged the demonstration in the camp areas.

Rohingya people of all ages joined the demonstration.

A Rohingya leader at Kutupalang camp, during the demonstration, told reporters that they had been organising the rally as they wanted to go back to their motherland.

‘Besides, we want to inform the world community about our demands, our feelings and our sentiment,’ he said.

‘We want to go home.. our motherland.. Arakan.. Myanmar,’ the leader said in an emotion-choked voice.

The banner the Rohingya people showed during their demonstration read 'We are the citizens of Myanmar', 'Myanmar is our homeland', 'Let's go home, Let's go to Myanmar'.

'Please UN, help us to go back to our motherland; please world community, help us to save our rights in Myanmar,' read the banner.

The demonstration was held aparently to mark the ‘World Refugee Day’ observed across the globe on June every year. The last time a demonstration of this magnitude was staged was on August 25, 2019, under the leadership of slain Rohingya leader Muhibullah.

United News of Bangladesh reported that the demonstration was also organized by Arakan Rohingya Society Peace for Human Rights, an organization founded by Muhibullah.

The program started at 10:00am. Rohingyas from five camps gathered at the football field of Balukhali Rohingya Camp-9 to participate in the programme.
