Man killed in Padma ferry accident

A head-on collision between two ferries on the Majhirkandi route in the Padma River led to the death of a man and injuries of at least 10 others on Sunday.

Khokon Sikder, 37, a pickup van driver, died after being crushed between two vehicles on one of the ferries as a result of the collision at around 5:15am, said the BIWTC’s Shimulia Ghat Manager Faisal Ahmed.

The ferry called “Begum Rokeya” coming from Shimulia ghat with 30-35 vehicles onboard collided with the ferry named “Begum Sufia Kamal” with 35-40 vehicles after reaching the Shariatpur turning point. Khokon was on the second ferry.

According to the River Police, a person from the ferry “Begum Rokeya” went missing.

At least 15 vehicles on the two ferries were damaged in the collision.

No cases had been filed yet in this connection, said Inspector Md Abu Taher Mia of Mawa river police outpost.

The River Police would take legal action after a complaint had been filed, he said, adding that a probe had been started into the accident.

Shimulia Ghat Manager Faisal said the movement of ferries on the route was normal now.
