Govt identifying negligent police officers: Home Minister

The authorities are identifying police officers who are reluctant to work and fulfil their responsibilities and whose time in service is over 25 years, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said.

He was responding to questions from journalists after an event in the Kakrail area of Dhaka on Tuesday.

Stating that the Bangladesh Police is a disciplined force, the home minister said: “The police force has been working to maintain peace and order and serve the public.”

When asked how many such police officers have been identified, the minister said it is an ongoing process. “If anyone looks back, a couple of such officers have gone on retirement every month every year. It is not anything new,” he said.

The home minister also said the BNP is holding meetings, processions and protests in various places. If it can do everything in accordance with the law, the police will have no objection, he added.

Referring to a speech of BNP leaders and activists at a rally, he said BNP leaders are saying that they will draw hundreds of thousands of people to Dhaka on December 10 and kick us out of the capital. They may have many strategies but the point of view of the government is clear. If there is any public nuisance or damage to property, the security forces will do their job.

“If BNP activists cause any public disturbance, disruption of public movement or damage to property, the law enforcement officers will act according to their duties,” he said.

Referring to traffic congestion in the capital during the rally, the home minister said that when political events or activities occur, it is natural that there will be traffic congestion on roads.

When asked about the recovery of the body of Buet student Fardin, the minister said that two days ago, one of his relatives went to the police and reported that he was missing. Later Fardin's location was found near one of his girlfriend's house. Then, his body was found. The police are investigating the case.

“We are looking into the matter. We will let you know when we get the correct information,” he said.
