Govt not capable of managing economic crisis: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday said that the government was not capable of handling the current economic crisis.

‘The government has destroyed the country’s economy. A one-party rule has been established, destroying democracy,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.

He made this comment after a dialogue with three political parties at the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka.

BNP held dialogues with the Minority Janata Party, Bangladesh NAP, and Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal as part of its ongoing initiative to forge unity among the opposition parties to oust the ruling Awami League through simultaneous movements.

‘The government must resign. An impartial Election Commission should be formed to ensure acceptable elections. After the election, the national government will be formed with the parties participating in the movement,’ he added.

Fakhrul said that the Awami League was the mastermind of the arson attack.

‘Awami League is the mastermind of arson attacks. Their people are involved in it. The BNP has never come to power through arson attacks, and it never will in the future,’ Fakhrul said.

The Awami League is talking about 'fire terror' out of fear of the ongoing movement, he said.

He claimed that the Awami League was unable to bring people to meetings even by hiring them and that the government was unable to stop the flow of people to BNP rallies even by shutting down public transportation.

Furthermore, in a separate statement, Fakhrul claimed that the Awami League government had begun the disappearance and arrest of BNP leaders and activists to derail their movement.

‘To destroy the ongoing mass movement aimed at bringing down the fascist Awami government, the government has started forcing BNP leaders and activists into disappearances and arresting them to frighten the people,’ he said.

Following this, Munshiganj district BNP member secretary Kamruzzaman Ratan was denied bail and sent to jail, former Juba Dal vice-president Ali Akbar Chunnu was taken by the detective branch, former Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal vice-president Rafiq Howladar, and former commissioner and Dhaka city south unit BNP joint convener Harun ur Rashid Harun were arrested.
