Would police stand and watch if chaos created: DMP commissioner

Hinting at the BNP, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq today said would the police just stand there and watch if chaos is created in the city of 2 crore.

"Not only us, I think, you [police freedom fighters] will not also tolerate this. On December 10, the public moved around peacefully under the control of police. The police are capable of facing such challenges in the future as well," he said at a felicitation ceremony for the police freedom fighters.

The programme was at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital marking Victory Day.

The DMP commissioner said, "You started the police force in 1971 and contributed to the Liberation War; many gave their lives. As a member of that force, we can proudly say that you are the bearer of the tradition and that we have maintained it from 1971-2022."

Golam Faruq said, in 2012-13, police were burnt to death by arsonists. But the police did not give up, nor lose morale. Many policemen died due to militancy in 2015-16.

He said in 1971, as the police gave their lives for the freedom of Bangladesh and fought for victory, police also stood by the side of the Bangalee nation in all crisis moments.

At the programme, police freedom fighters reminisced the history of police in the Liberation War.
