Dhaka Metropolitan Police once again banned releasing sky lanterns (Fanush) during the New Year's celebrations.
At a press conference at its media centre today, DMP Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruk said using firecrackers during the festivities will also be banned.
The DMP every year imposes such ban but it hardly comes into effect, resulting in various untoward incidents.
Multiple incidents of fire were reported across the country including some in Dhaka over rogue sky lanterns crashing on rooftops and houses last year.
"Dhaka is a very densely populated area. There had been accidents due to releasing sky/paper lanterns... If anyone releases those, strict legal action will be taken against them," said the DMP commissioner.
The police official also said no outdoor celebrations will be allowed on the 31st night like previous years and bars will remain shut from 6:00pm today to tomorrow evening.
No DJ party will be allowed either, he said.
Although there is no threat centring the New Year's celebrations, members of the Counter Terrorism Unit and detectives will be on high alert all over Dhaka, he said.
The DMP has taken special security measures in Dhaka University, Hatirjheel, Banani and Gulshan areas on the eve of English New Year.
Outsiders and vehicles will not be allowed to enter the DU campus after 6:00pm. Residents of the area will be able to enter through Shahbagh crossing, subject to identification.
No one will be able to stay there after evening. No bikes will be allowed to enter either, he added.
No one except the residents of Gulshan, Banani and Niketon will be allowed to enter those areas after 8:00pm, he added.
Besides, police will take action against reckless and drunk driving on the city streets.
