Two injured as Swechchhasebak League leader opens fire at Gulshan

At least two people were injured at Gloria Jean’s premises of Gulshan 1 in Bangladesh capital Dhaka when a leader of Swechchhasebak League, the volunteer wing of the ruling Awami League, opened fire there on Sunday afternoon.

Locals said that Wahidul Islam Mintu, a vice-president of Dhaka north city unit of Swechchhasebak League, opened fire there in a bid to take away one of his acquaintances who tried to leave the place without paying Tk 75,000 after sending the amount from a mobile financial service provider.

Identities of the injured people were not confirmed immediately but witnesses said that one was a driver and another was a rickshaw-van puller.

'We are still investigating into the matter to get a clear picture,' said sub-inspector Hasibul Alam, a police box in charge who visited the spot at Gloria Jean’s in Gulshan-1.

Witnesses said that the police arrested the Swechchhasebak League leader after people had kept him cordoned at Gloria Jean's.

'The incident took place after 4:15pm and I saw two injured were rushed to hospital. The armed man was arrested,' said a driver Shakahwat Hossain Habib.

He said that he had heard sounds of firing four to five bullets.

Abul Bashar, a trader at nearby Gulshan shopping centre, said that a youth, Arif, came to the mobile financial service provider Habibur Rahman and sent Tk 75,000 to three numbers.

When the service provider wanted money from Arif, he expressed his inability to pay the money and called Wahidul Islam Mintu, Tipu, Humayun and Shariful to rescue him from the traders at the market.

Witnesses said that Swechchhasebak League leader Wahidul Islam along with his associates came to the spot and opened fire in a bid to take away Arif from the spot.

The locals and traders cordoned Wahidul immediately after opening fire there.

Wahidul was arrested for shooting incident, said Gulshan deputy commissioner Abdul Ahad.

Abdul Ahad said that they were interrogating the suspect.
