Expatriate sued under DSA for making video on minister

An expatriate was sued under the Digital Security Act for making a video on information and broadcasting minister Hasan Mahmud, who is also a joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League.

Masud Rana, a former joint secretary of the Panchlaish unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, filed the case with the Chawkbazar police station in Chattogram on Wednesday night, according to Manjur Kader Majumder, the officer-in-charge of the police station.

According to the case statement, the accused Abdur Rab Bhutto is an admin of the Facebook page ‘London Bangla Channel.

‘Masud Rana filed the case under DSA, being self-motivated as he noticed that the video published on Facebook by Abdur Rab Bhutto was defamatory for AL joint general secretary Hasan Mahmud,’ the OC said, quoting the case statement.

Police were investigating the case, the OC added.

The plaintiff, Masud Rana, could not be reached for comment.

Amrul Karim Rashed, a personal assistant to Hasan Mahmud, sent a press release on Thursday mentioning the case against Abdur Rab Bhutto.

Rashed, however, told that the minister didn’t ask Masud Rana to file the case.

According to the case statement, Abdur Rab Bhutto published a video on Facebook and YouTube accusing the minister of possessing illegal wealth abroad.
