Over 50 injured as police attack BNP men in Chattogram

At least 55 people were injured as police attacked the activists of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party during a rally at Kazirdewri in Chattogram on Monday afternoon.

BNP organised the rally as a part of its countrywide demonstration to press home their 10-point demand and protesting at the power price hike.

Police detained 20 activists of BNP from the area after the attack.

BNP said that at least 50 of their leaders and activists were injured and most of them received bullet injuries as the police opened fire on BNP activists.

‘At least 50 activists were injured as police opened fire on BNP activists and charged batons,’ said Md Idris Ali, former office secretary of Chattogram city unit of BNP.

‘The activists are now under treatment at the different private hospitals,’ he said.

Witnesses said that BNP activists engaged in an altercation while police barred them from joining the rally with a procession on the road which led to clash.

Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Md Jahidul Kabir said that they only charged batons on the BNP activists after they hurled stones targeting police.

We launched a drive to arrest the persons who were involved in the clash, the OC said.

Chattogram city unit BNP convener Shahadat Hussain presided over the rally while BNP’s organising secretary Mahbuber Rahman Shamim, Chattogram city unit BNP member secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar, among others, addressed.
