Court frames charge against Evaly CEO, chairman

A Dhaka court today framed charges against Mohammad Rassel, founder and CEO of Evaly, and his wife Shamima Nasrin, chairman of the e-commerce platform, in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.

Rassel, now in jail, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Judge AM Zulfiker Hayet of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal read out the charges to him.

The tribunal, however, could not read out the charges to Shamima Nasrin as she went into hiding after getting bail in the case.

The tribunal issued an arrest warrant against her.

Prodip Kumar Das, a sub-inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and also the investigation officer of the case, on September 16 last year submitted the charge sheet against the couple.

On September 30 of 2021, Mohammad Alamgir Hussain, an Evaly customer, filed the case against the couple and 15-20 unidentified people with Badda Police Station.

According to the case statement, the complainant sent Tk 28,00,000 through bKash and Nagad from January 1 of 2020 to September for buying electronic goods from Evaly.

Though Evaly was supposed to deliver the goods within 45 days of ordering, he didn't get those even after seven months, the case statement added.

Rab arrested the couple on September 16 of 2021 during a raid at their flat in the capital's Mohammadpur after a customer filed a case with Gulshan Police Station over embezzlement.

Later, they were shown arrested in different cases filed against them with different police stations over embezzlement.

On December 28 last year, another Dhaka court framed charges against the couple in a case filed with Gulshan Police Station over embezzlement of Tk 3.1 lakh from a customer.
