SCBA elections: 10 journos hurt in police assault

At least 10 journalists were injured after police assaulted them when they were covering the annual Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election this noon.

The incident took place around 12 noon when reporters were covering a demonstration by pro-BNP lawyers demanding formation of a fresh election conducting committee under an "acceptable" authority.

Witnesses said police first entered the Shaheed Shafiur Rahman Auditorium to evacuate the protesting lawyers. At one stage, pro-BNP and pro-Awami League lawyers started fighting and police became involved.

The law enforcers attacked journalists when they were taking photos and videos of police action on the protesting lawyers, injured journalists and witnesses told.

Several pro-BNP lawyers were also hurt in the incident.

The injured journalists include Jabed Akter of ATN News, SM Nur Mohammad of Ajker Patrika, Prothom Alo photo journalist Shubhra Kanti Das, multimedia reporter of Daily Manab Zamin Abdullah Al Maruf, ATN Bangla camera person Humayun Kabir, DBC camera persons Mehedi Hasan and Baishakhi TV camera person Ibrahim.

Jabed was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Contacted, Md Shohidullah, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division of Police, said he will talk about the matter later on.
