4 killed as bus rams into truck on Dhaka-Mawa highway

At least four people were killed and 19 others injured when a bus hit a truck that had broken down on the Dhaka-Mawa in Munshiganj's Sreenagar upazila highway this morning.

Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman Al Mamun, superintendent of police of Munshiganj, confirmed news of the accident.

Three of the deceased were identified as Hajera Begum, 50, and Saiful Islam, 30, and Arif, 23.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hasrana Highway Police Station Molla Zakir Hossain said the accident took place in Shologhar area around 9:00am when a Shariatpur-bound bus of Padma Travels hit a truck, which broke down on the highway, from.

Hajera and Saiful died on the spot and their bodies have been handed over to their relatives, the OC said.

Farhana, an on-duty doctor at the emergency department of the health complex, said Arif and an person yet to be identified died on way to the health complex.

Four among the injured were sent to a Dhaka hospital for treatment.

Traffic on the highway was disrupted for around an hour following the accident. It normalised after the wreckage was removed from the highway, SP Mahfuzur said.

On most years, there is an increase of road accidents and casualties during Eid vacations, when a large numbers of people from the capital travel to their home districts.

In 2022, according to data from the Road Safety Foundation, at least 376 people died and 1,500 injured in road accidents over 14 days surrounding the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

According to another road safety organisation, Jatri Kallyan Samity, the numbers were 418 people dead and 844 injured over 15 days.
