BNP to outline polls-time govt with allies

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday said that the party would discuss with other opposition parties to outline a non-partisan election-time government.

‘The Awami League will be forced to hold elections under a non-party government. The BNP will not go to any election under Sheikh Hasina,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said while talking with reporters at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka.

Fakhrul said that prime minister Sheikh Hasina should resign.

‘They [Awami League] have systematically amended the constitution in order to establish a one-party rule. They have committed cheating using the High Court verdict on the caretaker government system,’ Fakhrul said.

Stating that this Election Commission (chief election commissioner and other election commissioners) should resign, he also said that foreigners had already sent a message - ‘either hold a fair election or resign’.

Criticising various policies of the government, he said that the economic crisis is due to the failure of the government.

He said that looting was going on in the banking sector.

He further said that the ongoing opposition movement would gather a greater momentum after Eid-ul-Azha.

Mirza Fakhrul disclosed that the physical condition of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was fine after she returned from the hospital.

He, however, said that Khaleda Zia’s health remained at risk as she could not get treatment at a specialised hospital, which is not available in the country.
