Eid rush: 8km tailback on east of Bangabandhu Bridge

An eight-kilometre tailback was created on the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail highway this morning following huge pressure of vehicles ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Toll collection on the bridge was also hampered multiple times as a number of vehicles broke down or met accidents, reports our Tangail correspondent.

Elenga Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahid Hasan said two accidents took place and one vehicle broke down on Bangabandhu Bridge early today.

As a result, the bridge authorities were forced to collect tolls from vehicles from 3:00am to 3:10am, 4:00am to 5:00am, and again from 5:30am to 5:45pm, the OC said.

"We are performing our duties on the road. Vehicles are moving. Hopefully, traffic will be normal in shortest possible time, the OC added.

While visiting the highway around 9:00am, this correspondent found that vehicles were moving slowly.

Huge traffic was seen on the connecting road at the eastern end of Bangabandhu Bridge from Salla in Kalihati upazila of Tangail from early morning to 9:30am.
