US condemns murder of RMG labour leader Shahidul in Bangladesh

The United States Department of Labor has condemned the recent murder of Bangladeshi readymade garments labour leader Shahidul Islam.

The Bureau of International Labor Affairs of the United States Department of Labor in a tweet on Wednesday reads, ‘@USDOL condemns the murder of Shahidul Islam, a union organizer from the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation. We call for a thorough and independent investigation and for the protection and advancement of union leaders’ human and labor rights.’

The US Embassy in Dhaka retweeted it.

Shahidul, the Gazipur unit president of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, came under attack by the cadres of Prince Jacquard Sweater Limited owner in Sataish Baganbari area in Gazipur when he was negotiating the demands of the factory workers on June 25.

Locals rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead.

The death sparked protests by different labour organisations in Dhaka, Gazipur and elsewhere in the country.
