Waterbus capsizes in Buriganga, three bodies recovered

The Fire Service and Civil Defence recovered three bodies from Buriganga after a waterbus had capsized in the river following collision with a sand-laden bulkhead in Telghat area under Keraniganj Sunday night.

Sadarghat River Police Station duty-officer Maruf Hasan said that all the bodies were kept at Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital.

All the three deceased are males, he said at about 11:45pm.

Earlier at about 8:15pm, the waterbus capsized with over 50 passengers on board when a sand-laden bulkhead collided with it in Buriganga at Telghat under Keraniganj upazila on the outskirts of Dhaka.

A message sent to media by the Fire Service at the night said that three rescue units, including divers, were conducting rescue operation in the area and have so far rescued eight people alive.

The waterbus capsized near the riverbank for which it can be assumed that most of the people swam ashore, it said.

Sadarghat River Police Station sub-inspector Rezaul Karim said that the waterbus was going to Telghat from Sadarghat.

He said that the waterbus had over 50 passengers on board.
