55kg of gold missing from customs warehouse at Dhaka airport

Some 55 kilograms of gold, which is worth over Tk15 crore, have reportedly been stolen from a Customs House’s warehouse at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Gold bars, ornaments, and valuables seized from passengers are kept in the warehouse of Dhaka Customs House.

During the calculation of the gold, customs officials found that a box containing 55kg of gold was missing from the warehouse. Officials say someone broke the locker and stole gold.

Law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies, including police and CID, are working to investigate the matter, Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House AKM Nurul Huda Azad confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Sources at the airport said that no one except for the customs officials is allowed to enter the warehouse. The theft in this secured warehouse was done by someone from the customs.

The commissioner of Dhaka Customs House said: "This incident is embarrassing for us. We are doing inventory to be completely sure. If it is confirmed, further legal action will be taken. A case will be filed at the police station.”
