Yunus trial a judicial harassment: DAG Imran

A law officer of the state on Monday refused to be a signatory to a counter statement against some global leaders’ call to halt the trial of Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, terming the trial a judicial harassment.

The law officer, deputy attorney general Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan, said, ‘I think the distinguished global leaders rightly called for halting Yunus’ trial as he is facing judicial harassment.’

He said that the attorney general’s office was collecting signatures from state’ law officers including the attorney general, additional attorneys general, deputy attorneys general and assistant attorneys general against the foreign personalities’ statement.

The signature was sought in a message circulated in a Whatsapp group of the 214 law officers of the state and the law officers were asked to put their signatures on the joint statements by 4:00pm Monday, he added.

Attorney general AM Amin Uddin, however, said that he was unaware about the incident as he did not seek any statement over Yunus’ issue.

Deputy attorney general AKM Amin Uddin Malik, who is the admin of the law officers’ Whatsapp group, said that he was collecting signatures of general lawyers in line with prime minister’s stance to oppose the global leaders’ call in favour of Yunus.

Nobody is being compelled to sign the statement,’ he added.

‘Being a law officer of the state, I don’t think there is a necessity of issuing statements and counter statements over Yunus’ matter,’ Imran told reporters at his office responding to journalists’ query.

He says, ‘The cases against Yunus could be dealt in other ways. But all thinks have been done to create pressure on him.’
