RMG workers block Dhaka-Mymensingh highway as GCC truck kills one

Readymade garments (RMG) workers from multiple factories have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway after a female worker was killed being hit by a garbage truck of the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) in the Kunia area of the city on Saturday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Monira, 30.

Agitated workers vandalized several vehicles and set the garbage truck on fire.

The body was recovered and sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue.

Gacha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Alam confirmed the matter.

Witnesses and locals reported that the workers, en route to their offices in the Kunia area of Gazipur metropolis around 8:15am, encountered the accident while crossing the highway.

Upon hearing the news, workers from nearby factories blocked the highway in protest.

The agitated crowd resorted to throwing bricks and stones, damaging 10-15 vehicles, and setting the city corporation's truck on fire. Police and traffic police arrived at the scene to control the situation.

Tongi Fire Station Senior Station Officer Abu Muhammad Sajedul Kabir Joardar said that fire service personnel could not approach the spot due to the ongoing clashes between the workers and police on the highway.

Gacha police station OC Shah Alam said that efforts were being made to restore control and manage the situation.
