8 missing as tourist trawler capsizes in Meghna

Eight people have been missing since a tourist trawler capsized after colliding with a bulkhead in the Meghna River near Bhairab in Kishoreganj.

The fire service diving team started their rescue operation on Saturday around 8am.

Kishoreganj and Bhairab Fire Service, Bhairab Thana and Bhairab Naval Police are working to rescue the missing persons.

Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service Mohammad Enamul Haque said that the accident occurred when the tourist trawler collided with a sand-bearing bulkhead in the Meghna River under the Syed Nazrul Islam Bridge in Bhairab at around 6pm on Friday.

After that, 12 people were rescued. Among them, a woman named Subarna Begum was rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where she died while undergoing treatment, he added.

The missing passengers are Bhairav ​​Highway police constable Sohail Rana, 35, his wife Moushumi, 25, daughter Mahmuda, 7, and son Raisul, 5, Aradhya Dey, Belal Dey, Roopa Dey, 35, and Anika Akhter.

Abdul Alim, the father of the missing policeman, said: "My son was working at the Bhairab Highway Police Station. He went out for a tour with his family.”
