BRTC staffers go on strike, demand arrears

Staffers of state-run BRTC bus service went on strike at Dhaka city’s Joar Shahara depot today demanding arrears.

Noor-e-Alam, manager of the depot located beside Kuril, told The Daily Star that the strike was clamped by drivers and staff this morning.

Chances are next to none of finding the state-run bus service from Uttara, Kuril, Cantonment and adjacent areas on the Shahbagh-Paltan-Motijheel line.

Around eighty buses from this depot usually travel on different routes, however today none of the buses left the depot, said a driver wishing anonymity.

Last time such a strike was held back in July. Back then the dues and arrears were cleared. Now, workers say arrears go as far as nine months for some.

Additionally, they are demanding pay from the national exchequer like other government employees instead of the earning-based pay structure.

Since the early eighties, BRTC workers received pay based on the earning of the buses; but they now demand to go back to the government pay system.
