The High Court on Tuesday asked the government and Dhaka city corporations to inform it how long it will take to import effective insecticide to kill mosquitoes.
They have been asked to submit separate reports in the form of affidavit by Thursday.
Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi’s bench issued the order after hearing from lawyers about effective steps taken by the two city corporations to eliminate mosquitoes.
Earlier in the day, lawyers of the two Dhaka city corporations, Barrister Taufiq Inam Tipu and Advocate Sayeed Ahmed Raja, told the court that the two city corporations have taken effective steps to control Aedes mosquito.
The court pointed out that the government had said the insecticide used by the city corporations was ineffective. The court then asked how many days it will take to bring effective medicine from abroad.
On July 25, the two Dhaka city corporations informed the High Court that they will launch a three-day anti-mosquito drive.
Later, the court fixed July 30 for the next hearing and sought details on steps taken by the authorities to prevent the mosquito menace.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has rapidly spread in all regions of WHO in recent years. Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Aedes albopictus. This mosquito also transmits chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika viruses.
More than 13,600 dengue cases have been reported from across Bangladesh since January 1, according to the government.
