HC seeks probe report over Titas’ death at ferry

The High Court has ordered the public administration ministry to submit its probe report over the death of Titas Ghosh, who died in an ambulance after a river ferry was put on hold due to a VIP movement.

The High Court bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order on Wednesday, after hearing a petition in this regard.

On July 31, the High Court formed a two-member committee comprising of a joint secretary and deputy secretary to conduct the probe into the incident.

The court also issued a rule asking why the compensation should not be awarded to the victim’s family.

On July 25, a ferry at the Kathalbari-Shimulia river route was delayed for three hours while waiting for the Abdus Sabur, a joint secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office working on the Access to Information (a2i) project.

Titas, an 11-year-old school student who was in an ambulance with severe injuries, lost a lot of blood. He later died on his way to the hospital.

A petition was filed with the High Court on July 30 seeking a directive to take legal action against the joint secretary and the ferry manager.

It also sought a compensation of Tk30 million to be paid to Titas' family, and a court order giving priority to ambulance movement at all ferry ports.
