Ashulia garment workers threaten to wage tougher movement

Workers of a garment factory in Ashulia, which was declared shut yesterday, have threatened for tougher movement if the authorities failed to resume operation by Saturday.

The workers of Eske Clothing Ltd also demanded restatement of 28 workers sacked on August 29 and justice for female workers who were allegedly beaten up for protesting the dismissal, our Savar correspondent reports.

More than 800 workers of Eske Clothing Ltd held a sit-in in front of the factory in Ashulia industrial belt area, on the outskirts of Dhaka, from 8:00am to 10:30am today and made the announcement.

Later, the demonstrators agreed to postponed the protest programme till Saturday, after workers’ leaders went and assured of taking measures to fulfill their demands.

"We will send an application to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the industrial police to meet the demands of the workers," said Sarwar Hosen, joint organising secretary of Bangladesh Bangladesh Bastra O Poshak Shilpa Sramik League.

Yesterday, two RMG factories were shut down for indefinite period, following an ongoing protest over dismissal of 58 workers.

Workers alleged that Eske Clothing Ltd and Naba Knit Composite Ltd in Ashulia industrial belt area sacked 28 and 30 workers respectively on August 29, without any valid reason.

Workers have been protesting the decisions since then.

Some of them also alleged that they were beaten by miscreants hired by the authorities of Eske Clothing on September 1. At least five workers, most of them women, sustained injuries.
