Govt harassing people instead of providing security : Mirza Alamgir

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said that the government was far from providing security to the people and was rather increasing their harassment.

He said it commenting on the construction of a police station at Tetultala playground in the Kalabagan area of the capital at a discussion programme at the National Press Club.

The discussion titled ‘Relevance of Sher-e-Bangla in Today's Context’ was organised by the Sher-e-Bangla National Youth Culture Foundation, marking the 60th death anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq.

Criticising the police’s move of constructing a police station at the playground, Fakhrul said that the Awami League government had destroyed all the institutions to cling to power.

‘You see, what the police are doing now. The clashes between the students of Dhaka College and the shopkeepers of New Market have claimed the lives of two people. What did the police do?’ he questioned.

‘At first, a case was filed against BNP leaders and a BNP leader was arrested and remanded for three days while every media reported that the main culprits behind the incidents were the activists of Chhatra League,’ Fakhrul said.

Police are erecting a wall to construct a police station building at Tetultala playground in the Kalabagan area despite the protests of the local people and eminent citizens, he said, adding that the police are yet to back away from their position.

Fakhrul said that a police station is being built by occupying the children's playing field, and numerous such incidents are happening all over the country.

Instead of providing security to the people, he said, police are harassing people.

The Awami League has taken a stand against the people and politics, he said, adding that this government was distorting the history on one hand, and on the other hand, it was completely destroying the economy and making Bangladesh a debt-dependent country.

Fakhrul said that by turning politics completely into a one-party system, the government was removing the democratic consciousness. He accused the government of doing these things in a planned manner.

Sher-e-Bangla National Youth Culture Foundation president Akhtarul Alam presided over the discussion programme.
