You still have time, step down, Mirza Alamgir tells govt

The BNP today asked the government to immediately step down from office for the sake of the people of the country.

Party's secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir asked the ruling Awami League to resign from office, otherwise there would not be an escape route for them.

"You [government] still have time. Try to read what is written on the wall," he said while addressing a march programme organised by Dhaka South City Corporation in protest of the price hike of power, gas and other essential items.

The programme also sought to increase pressure on the government to accept their 10-point demand, including holding the next polls under a non-partisan caretaker government.

Fakhrul said the only demand of the people of the country is the resignation of the government.

Regarding the presidential election, the BNP leader said nobody was aware of the nomination and even the president-elect himself in a television interview said he was not aware of his nomination.

"We have repeatedly said that through this constitution, the prevailing crisis will not be resolved. Constitution needs to be amended. We have placed a 27-point state reform proposal and those need to be implemented to bring check and balance between the president and prime minister."

BNP's Dhaka north and south city units marched in the capital as part of their simultaneous movement to oust the current government.

The Dhaka south city unit marched from Gopibagh to Nayabazar while the north city unit marched from Uttara's Jasimuddin Road intersection to Abdullahpur.
