AL asks activists to remain vigilant

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday urged its party leaders and activists to remain vigilant against main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s ill motive.

‘Our leaders and activists have to remain vigilant as they [BNP] have an ill motive. They started evil game taking communal forces on their side….. Action will be taken considering the situation.

Everyone has to take own responsibilities,’ said  Quader at a press briefing held at the party’s headquarter on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital in the afternoon.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said that Awami League would show how to respond to unrest with peace.

‘It has been proved that Awami League leaders and activists are united. We, all, have to take oaths that we will sacrifice our lives to establish ideology,’ said Quader.

About today’s programme, Quader told the media that the party would start programme through cultural performances at 11:00am and the main rally would begin at 2:30pm at the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka.

He said that he was in confusion whether BNP wanted peace sincerely or paying lip service only.

Referring to the chief election commissioner’s comment that the expected environment for holding a fair election was yet to be achieved, AL general secretary said that one day’s comment could not make the electoral system questionable.

‘We want a peaceful environment before the election, during the election and after the election,’ he added.

He claimed that 82 reforms were made to the Election Commission.

He also said that there was no alternative to Sheikh Hasina for state power.

About the arrest of BNP joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon before the October 28 rally, Quader said, ‘Khokon was arrested for killing BNP activists.’

Jatiya Sangsad deputy leader Matia Chowdhury, AL presidium members Muhammad Abdur Razzaque, Muhammad Faruk Khan and Jahangir Kabir Nanak along with its joint general secretary Hasan Mahmud, among others, were present at the press briefing.
