Govt officials campaign in Bangladesh’s ‘dummy polls’: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday alleged that government officials were also taking part in electioneering in favour of the ruling Awami League candidates for the January 7 general election.

‘The election is becoming an election of a staged dummy election of the ruling party people,’ BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said at a virtual press conference.

Rizvi said that even voters did not have any interest in this election of pre-determined results without opposition parties.

‘Common people are being forced to join in processions. The ruling party people are threatening locals to leave the area. Now people are fleeing their areas when they hear slogans seeking votes for the ‘boat’ symbol in public announcement system,’ he said.

He said that money was being distributed openly to buy votes in various places.

In Brahmanbaria-4 seat, law minister Anisul Huq fearing that voters will not come to polling centres, his people have announced a cash reward to bring voters to the polling centres, Rizvi said, adding that leaders of the Awami League are openly admitting that they came to power by robbing votes in 2014 and 2018 elections.

‘Our appeal to the people of the country is not to vote in this fraudulent election to help win the candidates who kills democracy,’ Rizvi said, adding that every arson attack is a planned and staged play by the government people to legitimise rigged elections.
