Judgement in graft case against Mirza Abbas deferred for third time

A Dhaka court on Thursday rescheduled the date on January 24 to deliver its verdict in a graft case filed against BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas in 2007.

Judge Monjurul Imam of Special Judge's Court-6 of Dhaka deferred the date citing that the verdict was not ready, Zahidul Islam, bench assistant of the court, confirmed.

With this, the court has rescheduled the date for the judgement for a third time.

During the trial, 24 prosecution witnesses testified before the court.

On November 22, the ACC and the defendants presented their arguments.

After closing arguments, the court fixed the judgment date on November 30.

However, as the judgment was not ready on that day, the court postponed it to December 12. On that day too, the judgment was not ready, so the court deferred it to December 28.

ACC Assistant Director Md Shafiul Alam filed the case against Abbas at Ramna police station on August 16, 2007, for allegedly illegally amassing wealth amounting to Tk5.97 crore and concealing information about his wealth of Tk33.48 lakh.

The ACC pressed charges against Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas in the case on May 14, 2008.

On June 16, 2008, the court framed charges against the couple.

But the High Court quashed the trial proceedings against Afroza following a writ petition against the order for framing charges against her.

On November 2, Mirza Abbas was officially arrested in the case.

Abbas was arrested in another case filed at Shahjahanpur police station over exploding crude bombs, attacking police and snatching firearms from them during the party's grand rally on October 28.
