15 injured as police, BNP clash in Comilla

At least 15 people, including three policemen, were injured in a clash between law enforcement and BNP activists in the Monohorpur area of Comilla on Friday morning.

The clash took place in front of Comilla Government Mohila College at around 10:30am when BNP leaders and activists held a procession as part of the party’s program calling for the boycott of Sunday’s election.

Firing and hurling of brick chips were reported in the clash.

According to BNP sources, activists prepared for a protest march under the leadership of Comilla South BNP Convener Haji Amin-ur-Rashid Yasin in the city.

When they gathered in front of the college, the police obstructed them, said BNP leaders.

A chase and counter-chase took place between BNP activists and police.

Police said that BNP leaders and workers threw brickbats at them.

At that time, the police also opened fire at the BNP activists.

BNP activists claim that 10-12 of their leaders and activists were injured.

BNP leader Amin-ur Rashid Yasin claimed that police attacked the peaceful program of the BNP without any provocation.

He demanded the release of arrested activists.

Kamran Hossain, additional police superintendent of Comilla Sadar (circle) police claimed that three policemen were injured in the clash. Besides, police detained two men on the spot.

He also said that police chased the BNP men as they gathered in the area to carry out sabotage.
