Dhaka, Feb 2 (Just News): The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division judge Syed Mahmud Hossain has been appointed as the new chief justice (CJ) of Bangladesh.
He will be the 22nd chief justice of the country.
Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain's appointment by the president, Md Abdul Hamid, on Friday, followed controversial exit of the previous chief justice, SK Sinha.
Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, the second most senior Appellate Division judge after acting chief justice Md. Abdul Wahab Miah, will take oath around 6:00pm on Saturday, law secretary ASM Md Jahirul Haq said.
President Hamid signed the appointment letter of the chief justice in the afternoon on Friday. A gazette notification in this regard will be issued shortly, officials concerned said.
The post of the chief justice fell vacant when chief justice Surendra Kumar (SK) Sinha resigned on 10 November 2017 while on leave.
Justice Wahhab Miah has been acting as the chief justice since 3 October.
Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain enrolled as an advocate of the district court in 1981 and with the High Court division of Bangladesh Supreme Court in 1983.
He also acted as deputy attorney general from December 1999 till his appointment as an additional judge of the High Court on 22 February 2001. His service was confirmed on 22 February 2003.
Mahmud Hossain was made a justice of the Appellate Division on 23 February 2011.
