4 nomination seekers arrested, one disappeared

Dhaka, Nov 21 (Just News): Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday submitted a new list with the Election Commission informing it that four of the nomination seekers of the party were arrested by law enforcement agencies and another had disappeared after schedule for next general election was announced.

BNP’s case and information reservation officer Salah Uddin Khan submitted the list along with a letter signed by its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to the EC secretariat, addressing the chief election commissioner.

The letter stated that police and other law enforcement agencies arrested at least 529 BNP leaders and activists since the EC declared the polls schedule on November 8 while some of them were produced before court days after they had been arrested.

It said that the law enforcement agencies arrested the party’s nomination seekers M Ibrahim Hossain of Bagerhat-4 constituency, M Anisuzzaman Khan Babu of Gaibandha-2, M Anowerul Haq of Netrokona-2 and Sheikh Robiul Islam of Dhaka-10.

It also said that the party’s nomination aspirant from Jessore-6 M Abubakkar Abu was not produced before any court after he was picked by law enforcers immediately after the announcement of the schedule for December 30 general election.

In the letter, BNP alleged that police and other law enforcement agencies have continued carrying raids at homes of BNP leaders and activists across the country.
Earlier, on November 15 and November 17 BNP submitted lists of its arrested leaders and activists and details of around 4,000 cases.

The EC, however, said that the commission has nothing to do in this regard if any cases were filed before declaring the polls schedule while it already asked the police not harass any innocent people.
