No freedom of speech in America, says Foreign Minister

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has claimed there are full freedom for free speech and media in the country.

“Foreigners are expressing concern over freedom of speech and media intentionally,” said the minister while giving an interview with DW on Friday.

Seven ambassadors including that of the US and the UK on Thursday issued a tweet in nearly identical language highlighting importance of the press and media freedom to ensure access to reliable and fact-based information on COVID-19 crisis.

Momen further said, “Is there any freedom of expression and independent media in their countries now who are talking in this regard? Even free speech is absent in America.”

Is any diplomat of that countries will be allowed to raise question in this issue, asked the minister.

He said the diplomats should rather discuss on planning how to help in fighting against COVID-19 in next six months.

“Look at America, no freedom speech is there. If you raise a question there they will make a barrier for doing this. They might not close your TV channel but will impose a charge which will be tougher than punishment,” said Momen.

“Bangladesh is a place of free speech. You can write whatever you like, no punishment even you write a lie. Those who are giving statements they have bad intentions,” he added.
