Police on Friday arrested Faridpur municipal unit president of ruling Awami League Nazmul Islam Khandaker Levy, 61, from his residence at Char Kamlapur area of the district town on Friday in a case filed over money laundering.
‘We arrested him from his residence today at about 12:30pm in the case of laundering Tk 2,000 crore,’ Faridpur superintendent of police Md Alimuzzaman told New Age.
Criminal Investigation Department of police June 26 lodged the case with Kafrul police station in the capital against recently-sacked Faridpur municipal unit AL general secretary Sazzad Hossain Barkat and his brother Imtiaz Hasan Rubel for laundering the money.
The two siblings were later arrested, taken on a 3-day police remand and, on completion of the remand on July 24, they confessed to the court about their involvement in the laundering, officials said.
A source in the police said that the siblings also had told the police the names of their patrons.
