Educational institutions likely to reopen in February

Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury has indicated that schools and educational institutions could be reopened in February after months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“In line with suggestions by the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19, schools and colleges are most likely to reopen next month,” he told on Monday.

However, academic activities at universities will not resume, the deputy minister said before adding they will be allowed to hold exams.

On Friday, the education ministry extended the ongoing shutdown of educational institutions to January 30.

The government announced general holidays in March last year when the pandemic unfolded and shut all the educational institutions the same month.

Although activities at both government and private offices were gradually restored, educational institutions have not been reopened.

Last month, the shutdown of all educational institutions, except Qawmi madrasas, was extended till January 16.

The government decided not to hold the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), and equivalent examinations, in light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC) and Primary Education Completion (PEC) also followed suit due to the pandemic.

Many students of private universities and schools are taking lessons from home and attending online classes.

Educational institutions also had to seek out different methods to grade performance of students.
