14 injured in BCL factional clash during preparation of jubilant procession

The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League Dhaka Metropolitan South and Dhaka University chapters on Friday clashed with each other during the preparation of a jubilant procession marking the golden jubilee of the independence of Bangladesh.

The clash took place near the Central Shaheed Minar at around 3:00pm that left at least 14 DU BCL activists injured.

Leaders and activists of DU unit BCL alleged that the attack was carried out under the leadership of Dhaka Metropolitan South unit BCL general secretary Jubayer Ahmed.

Witnesses said that the factions locked in a quarrel over playing songs on a sound system in the area.

At one stage, Jubayer came to the spot and attacked the DU leaders and activists, witnesses said adding that five DU unit BCL leaders and activists were injured in the clash.

‘I request the central BCL to ensure proper punishment for the attackers by conducting a proper investigation into the anti-disciplinary activities of those who attacked the leaders and activists of BCL unit of DU, said Saddam Hussein, DU chapter BCL general secretary.

Jubayer, however, said, ‘I did not attack anyone. On the contrary, I have been attacked.’

The leader said that he was attacked for asking them to turn the sound system off.

Central BCL president Al Nahean Khan Joy and general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee were contacted on their mobile phones more than once but they did not respond.
