Captain Nawshad’s body arrives in Dhaka

Body of Captain Nawshad Ataul Quaiyum, a pilot of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, was flown to Dhaka from India's Nagpur this morning.

"Carrying the body of Capt Nawshad, a flight landed at Dhaka airport at around 9:12am," Dr Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal, managing director and CEO of Biman, told The Daily Star.

Captain Nawshad's two sisters, who were in Nagpur, also came to Dhaka via the same flight, Biman sources said.

Sources at the national flag carrier said a Dhaka-bound flight from Doha brought the body of the deceased with a stopover at Nagpur's Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport.

State Minister for Civil Aviation M Mahbub Ali, top officials of the ministry, Biman and Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, leaders of Bangladesh Airlines' Pilot Association, among others, were present at the airport to show their last respect to the well-reputed pilot of the national airliner, sources at Biman said.

From Dhaka airport, Captain Nawshad's body will be taken to his residence at Uttara, Biman sources said.

The pilot will be buried at Banani graveyard today, said Captain Sajjad, a pilot of Biman.

Captain Nawshad, who suffered a massive heart attack mid-air while commandeering a Muscat-Dhaka flight, died on Monday at a hospital in India. He was 44.

The pilot was in deep coma with ventilation support soon after he was admitted to the Kingsway Hospital in Nagpur following emergency landing of BG-022 on August 27.
