BGB deployed in 22 districts to ensure security for Durga Puja

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed in 22 districts as violence erupted in several places following reports of "demeaning the Holy Quran" in Cumilla.

As per the demand of district administration and direction from the home ministry, the BGB personnel have been deployed to ensure security for Durga Puja celebration, according to a BGB press release quoting Lt Col Faizur Rahman, director (operations) of the force.

The 22 districts include Cumilla, Narsingdi and Munshiganj, it said, adding BGB personnel will also be deployed in Dhaka if there is demand from the concerned authorities.

At least three people were killed and many others were injured yesterday as mob and police clashed in Chandpur's Hajiganj upazila following the Cumilla incident.
