Garments workers take to streets in Mirpur demanding pay hike, arrears

Garment workers blockaded roads in the capital’s Mirpur area on Wednesday demanding pay hike and arrears.

The workers first took up positions at the Mirpur 10 intersection at around 9am, halting traffic movement in the process.

A clash took place between the protesting workers and locals in Mirpur 13 as well.

The demonstrators claimed that some local Chhatra League leaders and activists had attacked them.

Sajal, a worker of Centex Garments, said: "We are protesting for our unpaid salaries and the factory owner hired some goons to attack us.

“Some Chhatra League leaders and activists assaulted us, leaving many of us injured.”

When word got around about the attack, workers of garment factories in Mirpur 13 and Mirpur 14 rushed out of their workplaces in groups and charged two temporary offices of the Awami League and its student unit, Chhatra League, in the area.

Mirpur model police station OC Mostafizur Rahman said garment workers had taken up positions to voice their demands.

Additional forces had been deployed to maintain law and order, he added.

Police are currently working to restore vehicular movement in the area.
