Notre Dame students stage demo protesting at fellow’s death in accident

Students of Notre Dame College staged demonstration at Gulistan point in Dhaka Wednesday afternoon protesting against the death of their fellow as he was run over by a waste-carrying vehicle of Dhaka South City Corporation in the morning.

Several hundred students of the college began the demonstration by blocking the road at Gulistan at about 3:00pm, about three hours after the victim Nayeem Hasan, 17, was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at about 12:00 noon.

The students tried to enter the Nagar Bhaban building near Gulistan but failed. They then returned to the place of the accident and began to demonstrate.

They carried handwritten placards reading ‘we want justice’ and ‘we want to save our lives’.

Severe traffic jam occurred in the surrounding areas due to the student protest.

The students withdrew their blockade at about 5:00pm as their teachers came to the spot and told the students that they had talked to the police who had assured them of justice.

The accident took place at about 11:45am and he was rushed to DMCH where doctors declared him dead at about 12:00 noon.

Deceased Nayeem Hasan was a second-year arts department student of Higher Secondary Certificate of the college.

Nayeem, son of Shah Alam, of Kamrangirchar area in Dhaka met the fatal accident on his way to the College from his residence.

Paltan Police Station officer-in-charge Salauddin Mia said that they seized the vehicle and detained the driver Rasel Khan.
