Students’ protest demanding justice, road safety intensifies

Students of different colleges in Bangladesh capital Dhaka took to the streets and staged demonstrations in different parts of the city on Thursday for the second consecutive day protesting against the Wednesday’s death of Notre Dame College student Nayeem Hasan in an accident and demanding road safety.

They blocked roads in Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar area, Farmgate, Uttara Azampur, Asadgate, Mirpur, Gulistan, and Bailey Road areas, reports received from the areas said.

Hundreds of students, mostly of Notre Dame College, for the second consecutive day on Thursday blocked Gulsitan Zero point demanding safe roads and trial for the killer of their fellow Nayeem.

Nayeem, 17, was killed on Wednesday as he was run over by a dustcart of Dhaka South City Corporation at capital’s Gulistan in the morning.

The agitating students said that the victim, Nayeem Hasan, laid on the road for around 20 minutes but no one stepped forward to take him to the hospital.

They also said that it was not an accident, it was a murder caused by the negligence of government and administration.

They said that the cleaner, who was not running the DSCC truck, did not have a driving license.

They blocked the Gulistan Zero Point at about 12:00pm on Thursday after staging a demonstration at Shapla Chattar.

Later, agitating students blocked DSCC building demanding ensuring justice from the mayor.

They blocked the main gate of the building for more than half an hour from around 2:00pm.

United News of Bangladesh reported that the students of different colleges also blocked roads at Farmgate, Uttara Azampur, Asadgate, Mirpur, and Bailey Road to protest against the death of Nayeem and to demand safe road.

They also demanded half fare for students for traveling by bus.

Vehicular movement in different parts of the city have been suspended due to the demonstrations, creating traffic congestion that caused immense suffering to commuters.

Abu Raihan Md Saleh, joint commissioner (traffic north), said, ‘Traffic congestions were seen in different parts of the city including Uttara Azampur, Gulistan, Farmgate and Asadgate as students were staging demonstrations demanding steps to ensure safe road and half bus fare for students.’
