Students block Mirpur road, continue protest demanding road safety

Several hundred students from various educational institutions blocked the Mirpur Road at Dhanmondi-27 point on Saturday demanding road safety and justice for Nayeem, who was killed by a Dhaka South City Corporation dustcart on Wednesday.

The agitating students checked documents of the vehicle on the road and driving licences of the drivers that was a common activity of student protests in 2018 Road Safety Movement.

They continued their blockade from 11:30 am to 2:15 pm.

They pressed nine- point demands, including ensuring justice for the students killed in road accidents through a speedy trial, half bus fare for all students on roads, waterway, railway and metro rails through a gazette notification and ensuring safe journey for women and girls on all the public transports.

Ashiqur Rahman, a HSC 2nd year student of Tejgaon College, said that they had found that most of the drivers, especially of buses, were driving their vehicles without driving licences.

'Students went on movement demanding safe road in 2018 but most of their demands are yet to be implemented, ' he added.

He said that they would continue their protests until their demands were fulfilled.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station officer-in- charge Utpal Barua said, 'Our traffic officials are filing cases against those having no valid documents and driving licences identified by the students'.
