44 individuals, companies sued for abnormal price hike

The Bangladesh Competition Commission has filed cases against some 44 individuals, firms and companies for their alleged involvement in abnormal price hikes and creating instability in the commodity markets by making artificial crisis of items like rice, flour, egg, chicken and toiletries products.

Out of those, cases have been filed against some 19 individuals and companies on charge of rice market manipulation, eight individuals and companies for flour, six individuals and companies for egg and five individuals and companies for chicken price manipulation while five individuals and companies for prices of toiletries items.

Officials at the Commission said that they filed the cases against those individuals and business establishments voluntarily while those would be called for hearing gradually from September 26.

The names of the individuals and firms against whom cases have been filed are Rashid Agro Food Products, Belcon Group, City Group of Industries, Bangladesh Edible Oil Limited, Paragon Poultry, Egg Traders Multipurpose Cooperative Society President Amanullah, Kazi Farms Group managing director Kazi Jahedul Islam, and Unilever Bangladesh Limited managing director.

The cases have been filed in line with the sections 15 and 16 of the Competition Commission Act.

‘The commission has filed the cases against those individuals and establishments on charge of price manipulation of some essentials . . . action will be taken against them as per the law,’ said Commission secretary M Abdus Sabur.
